Trip Introduction

Manaslu, also known as Kutang, is the eighth highest mountain in the world and the centerpiece of the famous Manaslu Circuit Trek. Located about 40 miles east of the Annapurna range, Manaslu dominates the Gurkha massif with its impressive ridges and expansive valley glaciers.

The mountain features multiple approachable routes, making it accessible from various directions. Its towering peak stands majestically above the surrounding landscape, visible from miles away. Originally called Kutan—where “tang” in Tibetan means “flat place,” describing the mountain’s summit—the name was later changed to Manaslu. Derived from the Sanskrit word Manasa, it translates roughly to “Mountain of the Spirit.”

The trek’s highest point is the spectacular Larkya La Pass at 5,160 meters (16,920 feet), considered one of the most dramatic high passes in the Himalayas. As with all Himalayan treks, the Manaslu Circuit includes sufficient acclimatization days to help trekkers adjust safely to high altitudes.

This trek mainly follows well-marked mountain trails and is suitable for trekkers with good cardiovascular fitness. However, it’s important to remember that trekking above 3,000 meters (10,000 feet) places greater physical demands on the body than walking at lower elevations.
