Trip Overview

Rara Lake is the largest of Nepal’s lakes. Located in the serenity of the isolated Dolpo region, its shores are majestic in their unspoiled appeal. The magic feeling of visiting this virgin area will accompany us on this journey, along with the best scenery in northwestern Nepal. The moderate trek from Jumla to Rara Lake will include glimpses into cultures and scenery much different from the rest of Nepal. We’ll cross a wilderness of mountain meadows and forests of pine, spruce, and juniper dotted with remote and isolated settlements. Along a backdrop of snow-capped mountain ranges, we’ll pass over several 3000 meter ridges on our way to Rara National Park, where we’ll explore the pristine natural surroundings of Rara Lake.


As you are picked from Tribhuwan International  Airpot, Kathmandu you will be accommodated in a three-star level Hotel with Bed and Breakfast.  We accommodate on the basis of twin shared room. A single room can be also accommodated upon your request. Your room will be facilitated with attached restrooms in the Kathmandu. During the Trekking premises, in some places, they only have a shared washroom and restroom. As you reach higher elevation single rooms may be difficult to manage.


During our Trek Authentic Nepali food is available and more common. You will also get international Cuisine such as Continental, Italian, Indian, etc. Breakfast-Dinner will be served as per lodge menu where we stay overnight. Lunch will be served on the trail of Next destination. During Trek, all meals will be provided whereas, only breakfast is served in Kathmandu. Sherpa Himalaya will serve you special last day dinner.

Physical Condition & Requirement

This Trek is a moderate level Trek. You will be walking for 6-7 hour a day on average. We will face the steep hill, cross steep, hilly terrain etc.  We will be heading mostly uphill where we will face an average of 4000m altitude change. You will be given acclimatization day in between the trail so that you will not face altitude sickness. If you have strong determination and hope in yourself  then this Trek will not be that difficult.

If you have done any Trek before it will be your skill but you don’t require pre-experience or any training for this Trek. If you have any health problems it would be better if you consult with a doctor before your visit and give the details to Sherpa Himalaya so that we could customize your trip as per your body requirement.

Best Time to Visit

Weather in Nepal is quite a favorable. For trekking we have two peak season; Spring & Autumn. Autumn season starts from September to November whereas Spring season starts from March to May. Beside this two season, you can visit Nepal in other months too but it is quite cold in January and rainy in the month of July & August.


Your health safety and last destination with high-quality service is our Main priority. Your guide has the authority to bring change in itinerary, stop or cancel any part of your itinerary if it is very necessary due to safety concern. However, these kinds of problem rarely arise. Our effort will be to follow our given itinerary. Weather condition, health problem or any natural disaster and flight cancellation due to bad weather in the mountain may bring change in itinerary.

Details Itinerary

Upon arrival at Nepal’s heart, the capital known as Kathmandu, via Tribhuwan International Airport, we will welcome you warmly and take you to the hotel where you will stay overnight. We will brief you shortly on your upcoming Trek with us after refreshment. We will also introduce you to your trekking guide and team guide.
we will gather to discuss in brief, the tour itinerary and other information. We will then check clothing and trekking equipment you will require during our travel. Overnight at hotel.
An hour flight from Kathmandu will take us to Nepalgunj or we can drive to Nepalgunj which will take about 10 hours. Nepalgunj is administrative center as well as business center of mid-western region and an interesting town on in Western Nepal bordering the state of Uttar Pradesh, India. Hindu and Muslims in equal approximation live in harmony. If we take flight then we will have enough time to visit Bageshowri temple and Muslim bazzar. Overnight in a hotel.
We will take an early flight to Jumla After breakfast assuming that we get early flight’s ticket. It will take about 40 minutes for the plane to land at Jumla from Nepalgunj. We will be warly greated at Airport by our crew and we will have a short discussion about upcoming trek. We will initiate out treak towards Dolpo valley particularly Jumla via Micha village. Our destination will be Chala Chaur where we will spend the night at a hotel.
After breakfast we will start our trek towards Sinja. Our trail will be along Jaljala Khola and across pine forests. There are numerous ancient buildings and monuments along the route and a 300 year old Hind temple is the oldest artistry we will see at Kanaksundari. We will encounter a 300 year old Hindu temple while passing through Kanaksundari. The trail to Sinja is marked with numerous stones in scripted with ancient writing dating back to the Malla dynasty, as Sinja was the historical capital of the Malla Kings during their rule. Overnight at Sinja.
This day’s trek will be along Sinja Khola and the trail will lead us through a gorge en route. Hiking in Dolpo valley is failry easy and less technical than trekking at other valley of Nepal. The trail will take us through lush forests and meadows that opens up in a beautiful valley full of spectacular landscapes. The peaks of the Kanjiroba Himal dominate the skyline as we ascend a gentle slope to Botan. Overnight at Botan.
After breakfast we will depart Botan and follow the Ghatta Khola trail which is along a stunningly beautiful wide valley dotted with farmhouses and terraced fields. We will pass via a police checkpoint where our documents and permits will be checked. We will witness several flour mills as we reach the entrance to Rara Lake National Park. The wild beauty and unmatched perfection of vegetation inside the park is unparalleled as we trek along pristine trails to our overnight stop in Gorosingha.
Today’s trek will ascend towards Ghurchi Mara ridge from Gorosingha as we will encounter an amazing panoramic view of the park all along the route. The azure waters of Rara Lake glisten on the northern horizon as we descend through verdant trails of birch, bamboo and many varieties of rare vegetation. Crossing the Khatyar Khola, we travel upstream to arrive before sunset at the banks of Rara Lake and we are sure to be astonished by the beauty before our eyes as the view will be the one you will never foreget.
These two days will be enough to capture beauty of lake with our eyes as well as our cameras. We will spend these two days exploring the heavenly shores of Rara, Nepal’s largest lake. Rara is the biggest and most beautiful lake of Nepal that is also the most difficult to access. We can assume how huge is Rara by a 13 kilometer circumambulation of the lake which is a truly a walk through one of the world’s most precious wild regions, with chances to spot species like the Himalayan tahr, musk deer, gorals, red pandas, and even rhesus and Langor monkeys. Swimming on some parts of Lake is permitted for an amazingly refreshing experience. We will also visit the deserted villages of Rara and Chapra on the lake’s isolated northern shore.
After breakfast, we follow the northern outskirts of the park to a ridge over which we will descend to Jhyari village. Along the Jhyari Khola, we will travel through meadows and farmlands, heading south towards the Dhauligar Khola valley. The trail is spectacular enough to provide glimpse of wilderness until dawn. We will camp near the river’s edge, its surging waters serving us a sweet lullaby as the stars emerge from a fathomless sky and we will reach magical place known as dreamland.
Today’s trail will lead as through Pina village as we climb towards Ghurchi Lagna pass. We will encounter a vast pasture and groves of walnut, descending gently into a narrow valley and then steeply to the village of Chautha. Overnight at Chautha.
As our trek will be heading towards south along Sinja Khola, we will pass number of ancient village which are typical settlement of local Mongolian races. We will experience sunset beauty of Danphe Peak which emerges over the horizon as we will cross an expansive meadow en route to Tharamara. Overnight at Tharmara.
Our destination for this day will be Jumla. We will start our trek following a gentle uphill slope to Khali Lagna, and after that we will ascend to a ridge from where Jumla can be spotted in the valley below us beneath a horizon of rugged peaks. Although the valley seems so near it takes plenty of walk and energy before we actually reach Jumla. This is a magical phenomenon of Nepalese valleys, you can call someone down below but it takes days to reach that place. The scenery is excellent upon our gradual descent, culminating in a challenging stretch before our final stop in Jumla. Spend the evening relaxing in one of Jumla’s restaurants and enjoy a hot shower. Overnight at Jumla.
We’ll board the plane for Nepalgunj. After breakfast and take the next available flight from Nepalgunj to Kathmandu. After reaching Kathmandu, we can take a rest or explore surrounding locality of Kathmandu and even do some souvenir shopping. Our guides will always help you with both souvenir shopping or sightseeing. Farewell dinner at night and overnight stay at Kathmandu.
Today you will have free day. You can check the city and do shopping if it is necessary. You will be invited for Last Day dinner by Sherpa Himalaya.
Today you will depart from Kathmandu. You will be dropped at TIA airport by Sherpa Himalayan representative, and we wave good bye.
