Lower Dolpo Trek offers an outstanding trekking experience in the remote western region of Nepal. The 16-day trek begins with visit to local sites in Kathmandu. Next, we fly to Jhupal via Nepalgunj and begin our trek through remote locations admiring the beautiful rain shadow landscape of the Himalayas, reflected in the colorful barren slopes of the mountains where the play of light and shadow is a perpetual fascinating spectacle. This is also one of the few areas where the pre-Buddhist Bon Po religion is still practiced. While on the trek, we get to muse at the yak caravans that maintain the traditional salt trade with Tibet. We also cross two high passes- Numa La and Baga La-and reflect on life amidst the tranquil waters of Phoksundo Lake.
As you are picked from Tribhuwan International Airpot, Kathmandu you will be accommodated in a three-star level Hotel with Bed and Breakfast. We accommodate on the basis of twin shared room. A single room can be also accommodated upon your request. Your room will be facilitated with attached restrooms in the Kathmandu. During the Trekking premises, in some places, they only have a shared washroom and restroom. As you reach higher elevation single rooms may be difficult to manage.
During our Trek Authentic Nepali food is available and more common. You will also get international Cuisine such as Continental, Italian, Indian, etc. Breakfast-Dinner will be served as per lodge menu where we stay overnight. Lunch will be served on the trail of Next destination. During Trek, all meals will be provided whereas, only breakfast is served in Kathmandu. Sherpa Himalaya will serve you special last day dinner.
Physical Condition & Requirement
This Trek is a moderate level Trek. You will be walking for 6-7 hour a day on average. We will face the steep hill, cross steep, hilly terrain etc. We will be heading mostly uphill where we will face an average of 4000m altitude change. You will be given acclimatization day in between the trail so that you will not face altitude sickness. If you have strong determination and hope in yourself then this Trek will not be that difficult.
If you have done any Trek before it will be your skill but you don’t require pre-experience or any training for this Trek. If you have any health problems it would be better if you consult with a doctor before your visit and give the details to Sherpa Himalaya so that we could customize your trip as per your body requirement.
Best Time to Visit
Weather in Nepal is quite a favorable. For trekking we have two peak season; Spring & Autumn. Autumn season starts from September to November whereas Spring season starts from March to May. Beside this two season, you can visit Nepal in other months too but it is quite cold in January and rainy in the month of July & August.
Your health safety and last destination with high-quality service is our Main priority. Your guide has the authority to bring change in itinerary, stop or cancel any part of your itinerary if it is very necessary due to safety concern. However, these kinds of problem rarely arise. Our effort will be to follow our given itinerary. Weather condition, health problem or any natural disaster and flight cancellation due to bad weather in the mountain may bring change in itinerary.

Arrival day in Kathmandu (1300m)
As you arrive to TIA Airport, Nepal you will be received by Sherpa Himalayan representative and you will be taken to three star hotel in Kathmandu. You will have facility of bed and breakfast.
Trek Preparation in Kathmandu
Today we will prepare for our Trek. We will check all the necessary gears and introduction with your Guide. You will be taken to shop If you have forgotten any gear that will be requiring in the Trek
Kathmandu to Nepalgunj 150m/490feet
An hour flight from Kathmandu will take us to Nepalgunj or we can drive to Nepalgunj which will take about 10 hours. Nepalgunj is administrative center as well as business center of mid-western region and an interesting town on in Western Nepal bordering the state of Uttar Pradesh, India. Hindu and Muslims in equal approximation live in harmony. If we take flight then we will have enough time to visit Bageshowri temple and Muslim bazzar. Overnight in a hotel.
Fly from Nepalgunj to Jhuphal (Dolpo) and trek to Dunai (2,850m/9,348feet), 45 mins flight, 2-3 hours trek
We will take an early flight to Jhupal After breakfast. It will take about 45 minutes for the plane to land at Jhupal from Nepalgunj. Jhupal is a beautiful town located at foothills of Himalayas from where we can see views of Annapurna and Dhaulagiri peaks to north. We will be warmly greeted at Airport by our crew and we will have a short discussion about upcoming trek. We will initiate out trek towards Dolpo valley. We will treak along Bheri River and our destination will be Dunai where we will spend the night at a hotel.
Dunai to Tarakot (2,543m/8,341feet), 5-6 hours
After breakfast our trek will continue along the bank of the Bheri River heading upstream on an easy and less technical trail. En route, we will pass through several deep gorges, hanging bridges and deserted villages. We will encounter a tremendous gorge with pine trees and a path built about seven meters above the river. After walking for a while, we will be within the reach of colorful, terraced field of Tarakot, a small village that stands on a hillock to the south of the Bheri River. Overnight in Tarakot.
Tarakot to Laini (3,160 m/10,365 feet), 6-7 hours
After breakfast, we will walk alongside Tarap Chu River and cross it twice before reaching Sandul Gompa. Sandul Gompa lies at a juncture between Barbung Khola and Tarap Chu River. We will continue walking on a trail that will take us through farm terraces and rural villages. After ascending and descending for a while, we will finally reach Laini. Overnight in Laini.
Laini to Nawarpani (3,545m/11,627 feet, 5-6 hours
After breakfast we will climb on a steep trail and walk along switchback above the Tarap River. The trek is interesting and exciting as the valley becomes a narrow gorge that in some places we have to jump, literally, from one side to another. After several vigorous ascends and descents will take us to the banks of the Chyugur Khola, from where we will reach Nawarpani. Overnight in Nawarpani.
Nawarpani to Do Tarap (4,090m/13,415feet), 7-8 hours
This day’s trek will be a long one that we will begin by ascending to Kamattarka at the jointure of the Tarap Chu and Lang Khola rivers. We will cross a narrow gorge and view wild rose and juniper bushes, which are typical of the dry inner Himalayan valleys. We will pass the village of Dho Tarap which is surrounded by an irregular stone wall. Overnight in Do Tarap.
Rest Day at Do Tarap for acclimatization
We will set aside this day again for acclimatization to minimize the chances of any member being affected by AMS (Acute Mountain Sickness). We will hike shortly to stay active as well. We will explore local area and get to experience Bon Po and Nyingmapa (Buddhist Sects) people’s way of life. Dolpa is rich with traditional culture and clothing. Men and women wear religious amulets and strings of amber, coral and turquoise. Overnight in Do Tarap.
Trek to Numa La Base Camp (4440m/14,563 feet), 6-7 hours walk
After breakfast we will trek towards the upper Tarap valley enjoying views of lush grasslands on both sides of the river. Our trek will be alongside Tarap Chu enjoying the amazing views of the vast Tarap valley with its wide plains and high mountains. We will have lunch at Tokyu village which houses a Buddhist Monastry. The trail is rough and sandy before reaching Numa La Base Camp. Overnight in Numa La Base Camp.
Cross Baga La pass (5,070m/16,630feet), trek to Dajok Tang (4,080m/13,382feet), 6 hours
After breakfast we will begin our steep climb uphill towards Baga La pass. Baga La pass is famous for providing fantastic views of the dry landscape and the distant snow-capped mountains including Mt. Kanjirowa unfolding its beauty right in front of our eyes. We will spend some time at the top of the pass taking pictures and generally enjoying the mesmerizing views. After that, we will descend to Dajok Tang for an overnight stay.
Dajok Tang to Ringmo (3,600m/11,808feet), 3-4 hours
This day’s trek will be on a route that entitles alongside beautiful pine trees and alpine vegetation. We will spend most of today’s trek on trails alongside beautiful pine forests. After trekking on sucha a beautiful trail with only gradual highs and lows, we reach Ringmo Village. Overnight in Ringmo.
Hike to Phoksundo Lake
After breakfast, we will begin exploring the great Phoksundo Lake which will be boasting with pride about its beauty. We see yak caravans moving in and out of Ringmo fot trading purpose mostly towards Tibetan borders on remote mountain trails. The place is even depicted in a popular Hollywood movie ‘Caravan’ shot mostly in this location. On our trek to the lake, we will also tour a nearby monastery. Upon reaching the Phoksundo Lake, we can enjoy a relaxing walk on the serene lake’s shores. Overnight at Phoksundo.
Phoksundo Lake to Sumduwa (3680m)
As we finish our Breakfast we will head towards Samduwa. Our trail will be of 6-7 hours long with gradual ascend and descend.
We will have lunch on the half way. This Day will not be much tough.
Sumduwa to Chhepka (2670m)
As similar Day we will have gradual ascend Trail. AS we well be having camping Trek we will make it on the half way. It will take 6-7 hours long.
Today as we will finish our breakfast we will head towards Dunai for our overnight stay. We will have 6-7 hours of Trek. This Day we will be making our Trek beside the river. Dunai is the headquarter of Dolpa Region providing almost all the facilities of shops and so on
As we finish our Breakfast we will head towards Juphal. Today we will have slight ascend trail. Our Trail will take around 5-6 hours long. Juphal will be our last day of Trek as we will reach the airport which makes flight to Nepalgunj
Fly from Juphal to Nepalgunj and fly back to Kathmandu
As we finish our Breakfast we will take our flight to Nepalgunj in the morning. It may take upto 30-35 min. As we reach to Nepalgunj we will be making flight to Kathmandu in the evening. We will walk around the Nepalgunj if we get enough time at Nepalgunj.
Free Day in Kathmandu
This day is set aside for unforeseen conditions. This day is also reserved for proper rest and shopping at Kathmandu. One can enjoy local Thamel market or rest on this day.Today you will be invited by Sherpa Himalaya for Last Day Dinner. Overnight at Kathmandu.
If your schedule is to departure from Kathmandu we would drop you to the airport as per your schedule or you can extend your holiday if you have time.
